Wales 20-52 Australia: Warren Gatland's side sink to new low

Cardiff, Wales (CNN) - Wales suffered a record 20-52 defeat by Australia in Cardiff on Saturday, as Warren Gatland's side slumped to a new low.

The Wallabies ran in eight tries to claim a famous victory, with Taniela Tupou, Marika Koroibete, Samu Kerevi, Kurtley Beale, James O'Connor, Andrew Kellaway, Nic White, and Pete Samu all crossing the whitewash.

Wales, who were without a number of key players due to injury, were outclassed from start to finish and never looked like getting back into the game.

The defeat was Wales' heaviest since a 66-28 loss to New Zealand in 2017, and it is the first time they have conceded more than 50 points at home since a 54-9 defeat by England in 2003.

Gatland, who is in his second spell as Wales coach, admitted that his team were "outplayed in every area" and said that he was "very disappointed" with the performance.

"We were second best in the contact area, we didn't win enough collisions, and we didn't have enough ball to put them under pressure," Gatland said.

"We've got to take it on the chin and learn from it. We've got a big game against South Africa next week, and we need to put this behind us and move on."

Wales will host South Africa in Cardiff next Saturday, while Australia will travel to Murrayfield to face Scotland.
