Video. Najib Mikati asks Iran to broker Hezbollah-Israel ceasefire
Prime Minister Najib Mikati has asked Iran to broker a ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel, according to a report by the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar.
The report, which was published on Sunday, said that Mikati made the request during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in Tehran on Saturday.
The report said that Mikati told Amir-Abdollahian that Lebanon is "keen to prevent any escalation" between Hezbollah and Israel, and that he believes Iran can play a "positive role" in brokering a ceasefire.
Amir-Abdollahian reportedly responded by saying that Iran is "ready to do everything it can" to help Lebanon, and that he would convey Mikati's request to Hezbollah.
The report comes amid heightened tensions between Hezbollah and Israel following a series of airstrikes by Israel on Hezbollah targets in Syria.
Hezbollah has vowed to retaliate for the airstrikes, and Israel has warned that it will respond with force to any attacks on its territory.
The United Nations has called for a ceasefire between the two sides, and the United States has also urged both sides to avoid escalation.
It is unclear whether Iran will be able to broker a ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel. However, the report suggests that Mikati is hopeful that Iran can play a role in preventing an escalation of violence.
