Teen stabbed on A38 as police launch attempted murder probe - Birmingham road closed for hours
What happened?
A teenage boy was stabbed in Birmingham broad daylight today, prompting a huge police response and the closure of a major city route for several hours.
The victim - believed to be aged 17 - was attacked on the A38 Bristol Road in the Selly Oak area of the city just before 4pm this afternoon, Thursday, June 1.
What did police say
West Midlands Police cordoned off the busy road in both directions following the incident. The road fully reopened just after 10.30pm.
A spokesperson for the force said: "We were called to Bristol Road, Selly Oak just before 4pm following reports of a stabbing.
"A teenage boy has been taken to hospital with serious injuries. Our investigation is in its early stages and we are working to establish the circumstances.
"The road is currently closed between Gibbins Road and Heeley Road. We would ask people to avoid the area while we carry out our enquiries."
What did witnesses say?
Witnesses reported seeing armed police and paramedics rushing to the scene.
One witness told BirminghamLive: "I literally just drove past and saw the cordon and the police with their guns out.
"It must have only just happened because the road was completely closed off and there were loads of police cars and a paramedic car.
"It's really worrying to think that something like this can happen in broad daylight."
Another said: "So sad to see something like this happen. Thoughts are with the young boy and his family."
What do we know about the victim?
The victim's age and condition are not yet known.
He was rushed to hospital following the attack but the severity of his injuries are not yet clear.

No arrests have been made and police said they were working to establish the circumstances of the incident.
