Stock Market: Stock Market Indices Start With Fluctuations
Indian stock markets started the week on a volatile note on Monday, with key indices witnessing fluctuations amid mixed global cues and weak domestic macroeconomic data.
The BSE Sensex opened higher but soon slipped into the negative territory, dragged by losses in IT, banking, and auto stocks. The index recovered some lost ground and closed the day with a marginal gain of 23.82 points or 0.04% at 59,263.02.
The NSE Nifty50 also witnessed volatility and ended the day with a gain of 14.50 points or 0.08% at 17,655.60. Broader markets outperformed the benchmarks, with the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices rising 0.5% and 0.7%, respectively.
The market breadth was positive, with 1,666 stocks advancing and 1,565 declining on the BSE. The volatility index, India VIX, eased by 2.35% to 12.71.
Among the sectoral indices, the IT index was the top loser, declining 0.8%. The banking, auto, and metal indices also ended in the red. On the other hand, the power, oil and gas, and consumer durables indices gained the most.
Globally, Asian markets were mixed, while European markets were trading higher in early deals. U.S. stock futures were also indicating a positive start on Wall Street.
