Sesto Calende, head-on collision between two cars: among the 4 injured is an 89-year-old woman

Four wounded, one in serious condition

A head-on collision between two cars occurred this morning in Sesto Calende, on the State Road 33 of the Sempione. Four people were injured, one of whom is in serious condition and was airlifted to the Maggiore Hospital in Novara. The other three injured were taken to the hospitals of Gallarate and Cittiglio.

According to an initial reconstruction of the carabinieri, it would appear that one of the two cars, an Alfa Romeo 147, invaded the opposite lane, crashing head-on into a Ford Fiesta that was coming from the opposite direction. The impact was violent and both cars were badly damaged.

The injured

The most seriously injured is the driver of the Ford Fiesta, an 89-year-old woman, who was trapped in the passenger compartment and had to be rescued by the firefighters. She was then transported by helicopter to the Maggiore Hospital in Novara, where she is in intensive care with multiple injuries.

The other three injured are the driver of the Alfa Romeo 147, a 25-year-old man, and two passengers, a 23-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman. All three were taken to the hospitals of Gallarate and Cittiglio with non-life-threatening injuries.

The causes of the accident

The carabinieri are still working to reconstruct the exact causes of the accident. It is not yet clear why the Alfa Romeo 147 invaded the opposite lane. It is possible that the driver was distracted or fell asleep at the wheel. The carabinieri are also investigating whether excessive speed played a role in the accident.

The road was closed for hours

The state road 33 of the Sempione remained closed for several hours to allow rescue operations and to remove the wreckage of the two cars. Traffic was diverted onto local roads.
