Qatar’s Health Minister Warns of Health System Strains, Outlines Shortlist for Khameneini’s Successor
Concerns Raised over Healthcare Capacity as COVID-19 Cases Surge
Qatar's health minister has expressed concerns over the country's healthcare system facing strains due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases. The minister warned that the system could reach its capacity if the current trend continues, and urged the public to adhere to preventive measures.
The minister highlighted the importance of mask-wearing, social distancing, and avoiding large gatherings. He also emphasized the need for vaccination, stating that it is the most effective way to protect oneself and others from the virus.
Shortlist of Candidates for Khameneini's Succession Emerges
Meanwhile, a shortlist of candidates for the succession of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has reportedly been drawn up. The list includes several senior clerics, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.
One of the leading candidates is Ayatollah Ebrahim Raisi, the current head of the judiciary. Raisi is considered a conservative figure with close ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Another potential successor is Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, the head of the Qom seminary. Arafi is seen as a more moderate figure who could bridge the gap between conservatives and reformists.
Other Candidates on the Shortlist
- Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi, former head of the judiciary
- Ayatollah Mohammad Taqi Mesbah Yazdi, conservative cleric
- Ayatollah Hassan Khomeini, grandson of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini
The succession of Khamenei, who has ruled Iran since 1989, will have significant implications for the country's future direction. The new leader will inherit a complex set of challenges, including economic sanctions, regional tensions, and a growing domestic reform movement.
The selection process is expected to be opaque and secretive, with the final decision ultimately resting with the Assembly of Experts, a body of clerics responsible for appointing the Supreme Leader.
The eventual successor will face the daunting task of guiding Iran through a period of transition and uncertainty, both domestically and internationally.
