Doherty ruled out of upcoming Ireland games

He picked up a knock during Tottenham's defeat to Sporting

Republic of Ireland defender Matt Doherty has been ruled out of the upcoming UEFA Nations League opener against Armenia on Saturday due to injury.

The full-back picked up a knock during Tottenham's defeat to Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

He missed Spurs' Premier League clash with Leicester on Saturday, and it has now been confirmed that he will also miss Ireland's upcoming fixtures.

Ireland manager Stephen Kenny has called up Wolves defender Nathan Collins as a replacement for Doherty.

Doherty's absence is a blow to Ireland, as he is one of their most experienced players.

He has made 29 appearances for his country and has scored two goals.

Doherty was a key player for Ireland in their successful qualifying campaign for Euro 2020, and he also played in all three of their games at the tournament.

Ireland will be hoping to get off to a winning start in their UEFA Nations League campaign when they face Armenia on Saturday.

They will then face Ukraine in Dublin on Tuesday.
