International Men’s Day: Nigerians urged to celebrate men’s contributions to society
The day is celebrated annually on November 19 to recognize and appreciate the achievements and contributions of men to society.
The National President of the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria, Dr. Minnie Oseji, urged Nigerians to take advantage of the International Men’s Day celebration on Friday to appreciate the contributions of men to societal development.
Oseji gave the advice while speaking with journalists in Abuja.
She said that men deserved to be celebrated for their contributions to the well-being of society and nation-building.
The theme of this year’s celebration is “Men leading by example”.
Oseji explained that the theme was apt because it highlighted the critical role men play in leading and inspiring others through positive actions and behaviors.
She said, “As we celebrate International Men’s Day, it is important for us to appreciate the contributions of men to our society. Men are our fathers, brothers, husbands, and friends. They play a vital role in our lives, and we should take this opportunity to celebrate them.”
She noted that men faced unique challenges in society, including the pressure to succeed, provide for their families, and conform to traditional gender roles.
She said that it was important to support men and create a more equitable society for them. She encouraged women to be supportive of men and to work together with them to build a better future for all.
Oseji encouraged men to take an active role in their communities and to be role models for younger generations.
She said, “Men need to be celebrated for their positive contributions to society. We need to encourage them to be active in their communities and to be role models for our children.”
She called on the government to create policies that support men and their families.
She said, “The government needs to do more to support men and their families. We need policies that promote work-life balance, that provide affordable childcare, and that address the unique challenges that men face.”
