Ilvamaddalena, Fascia: "The result is too harsh"
The Provincial Councilor on the sentence against the former Mayor
"No one has benefited from the waste of the territory, the confiscation is a mistake"
The Provincial Councilor for Environment, Giorgio Fascia, expressed his disappointment with the sentence against the former Mayor of Ilvamaddalena, Gianfranco Satta, sentenced to 8 years in prison for environmental devastation and waste of public money.
"I am sorry for the outcome of the trial, which I believe is too harsh," said Fascia. "The sentence is based on an accusation that I consider unfounded, that of having allowed the uncontrolled dumping of waste in the territory of Ilvamaddalena."
According to Fascia, there is no evidence that the former Mayor has ever favored illegal activities or that he has benefited from the waste of the territory. "On the contrary," he added, "Satta has always worked to protect the environment and to promote sustainable development in his municipality."
The Provincial Councilor also criticized the decision to confiscate the former Mayor's assets, considering it "a serious mistake" that will further impoverish the community of Ilvamaddalena.
"The confiscation of assets will not solve the problems of the territory," said Fascia. "On the contrary, it will only create further difficulties for the citizens and for the local economy."
Fascia concluded by expressing his hope that the Court of Appeal will overturn the sentence and restore the good name of the former Mayor of Ilvamaddalena.
