Football Supporters’ Association raises concerns over handling of England fans in Volos as Uefa opens disciplinary proceedings

The Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) has criticised the Greek police for their use of “shields and tear gas” against England fans in Volos on Wednesday night, and has asked fans to provide details of their treatment.

The FSA said in a statement that it was “extremely concerned” by reports of “heavy-handed policing” and the use of “disproportionate force” against England fans, who were in the city for the Three Lions’ Nations League match against Greece.

The statement said: “We have received reports of fans being hit with shields and tear gas, and of being kettled and held for long periods of time in cramped and unsanitary conditions. This is unacceptable and we will be raising our concerns with the Greek authorities and Uefa.”

The FSA urged England fans who were in Volos to provide details of their treatment to the organisation via its website or social media channels.

Uefa has opened disciplinary proceedings against the Greek Football Federation over the incidents, which occurred after England’s 1-0 defeat.

The charges relate to “crowd disturbances”, “throwing of objects” and “use of fireworks”.
