Football Association probing alleged use of tear gas and 'heavy-handed policing' against England fans at Hungary match
The Football Association (FA) is investigating reports that England fans were subjected to tear gas and "heavy-handed policing" during their Nations League match in Hungary on Saturday.
Footage circulating on social media appears to show Hungarian police using tear gas to disperse England fans who were gathered outside the Puskas Arena in Budapest before the game.
The FA said in a statement that it is "aware of the reports" and is "currently investigating."
England fans allege 'unprovoked' use of tear gas
England fans have alleged that the use of tear gas was "unprovoked" and that they were subjected to "heavy-handed policing" by Hungarian authorities.
One fan told Sky News that he was "hit by tear gas for no reason" and that he saw "other fans being beaten by police with batons."
Another fan said that the atmosphere outside the stadium was "hostile" and that England fans were "being treated like criminals."
Hungary denies excessive use of force
Hungarian authorities have denied using excessive force against England fans.
In a statement, the Hungarian police said that they used tear gas "in accordance with the law" after England fans "became aggressive and threw objects at police."
The police also said that they arrested 14 England fans for "disorderly conduct."
FA calls for UEFA investigation
The FA has called on UEFA to investigate the incidents that occurred in Budapest.
In a statement, the FA said that it is "deeply concerned" about the reports and that it believes "a full and thorough investigation is now necessary."
UEFA said in a statement that it is "aware of the incidents" and that it is "looking into the matter."
England fans face further restrictions in Hungary
England fans are facing further restrictions in Hungary following the incidents in Budapest.
The Hungarian government has banned England fans from attending the second leg of the Nations League match in Budapest on Tuesday.
The government has also said that England fans will be required to have a ticket for the match in order to enter Hungary.
