Roberto Mancini's wife, Camilla, has died at the age of 52 after a long battle with cancer.
Mancini, who is the manager of the Italy national team, confirmed the news in a statement released on Tuesday (July 26).
"It is with the deepest sorrow that I have to announce the passing of my beloved wife Camilla," he said. "She passed away peacefully surrounded by her family after a long struggle with cancer."
Camilla Mancini was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2020 and had been receiving treatment since then.
Mancini, 57, married Camilla in 1990 and they had three children together: Filippo, Andrea and Benedetta.
In his statement, Mancini thanked the doctors and nurses who had cared for his wife during her illness.
"I would like to thank the doctors and nurses who have cared for Camilla with such great kindness and dedication," he said. "They have done everything they could to help her and we are eternally grateful."
Mancini also asked for privacy at this difficult time.
"I would ask that you respect our privacy at this time as we grieve the loss of a wonderful wife and mother," he said.
Tributes have been paid to Camilla Mancini from across the football world.
Manchester City, where Mancini managed from 2009 to 2013, said in a statement: "Everyone at Manchester City is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Camilla Mancini.
"Our thoughts and condolences are with Roberto and his family at this time."
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) also paid tribute to Camilla Mancini, saying in a statement: "The FIGC and the entire Italian football family are deeply saddened by the passing of Camilla Mancini.
"We extend our deepest condolences to Roberto Mancini and his family."
Mancini is one of the most successful managers in Italian football history. He won the Premier League title with Manchester City in 2012 and also led Italy to victory at the 2020 European Championship.
